       Mike Glenn Announces 31st Camp for Deaf Athletes

           

           

            Mike Glenn has announced that the opening of the 31st annual Mike Glenn Basketball   Camp for the Hearing Impaired will be on June 20, 2010.  In the tradition of the camp and in honor of Charles Glenn, the first basketball coach at the Georgia School for the Deaf at the Perry Farm Campus in Cave Spring, Georgia, the festivities each year begin on Father’s Day. Glenn adds, “In our camp and its start date, we celebrate tradition, heritage, purpose, and our theme.  Our purpose is to empower deaf and hard of hearing people and include them in the mainstream of American culture. Our theme is Celebrating Diversity through Basketball. We continue the heritage that my father initiated in 1952.”

                       

            The week-long camp will be held in Decatur, Georgia and culminate on Friday night, June 25, with an admission free all-star game at the Decatur Recreation Center in downtown Decatur.  Male and female participants will sharpen their skills, raise their level of self esteem, and share diverse cultures from various regions of the country. Deaf and hearing athletes will come together through the unifying influences of sports, competition, and compassion.

 

            We would be remiss if we did not take time to thank the sponsors, supporters, coaches, and media members who made our 30 year celebration one of the most memorable occasions in our camp history and in the lives of our participants. The young athletes were enthralled by whale-sharks and other underwater life at the Georgia Aquarium, the world’s largest aquarium. The visit to Six Flags over Georgia also rated very highly. Dinner with Mildred Nelson (my first hero), Lois Smiley, Larry Brown, Howard Sidwell, and other deaf adults who played for my dad in the early years was interesting and inspirational to the participants. They saw themselves as a connection to efforts that were made for their elevation years before they were born. CNN, the Associated Press and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution all gave expert coverage locally and nationally. Newspapers across the country, and a few outside the country, carried our story and celebrated our longevity and commitment.

 

            In a time when many camps closed or had fewer participants, we expanded and had more activities.  With appreciation and gratitude in my heart, I thank you and ask that you please continue your support!
